Hairstyles are much the same as beards in that, for maximum effect, they should fit the contours of your handsome mug. To help you get it right, we asked hairstylist Natalie Rose Dixon for some tips:
The Best Hairstyles for Round Faces
Round faces are defined by a soft jawline and a weak chin, which can give you a sort of chubby appearance. To avoid that, Dixon recommends having your hair cut short on the sides, but letting it grow long (a few inches) on the top. This will make your face look slimmer than it actually is.
The Best Hairstyles for Square Faces
Square faces are exactly that — square. This means the wrong hairstyle might have you looking like a real-life blockhead. Dixon says your best bet here is to avoid anything too bulky: “Go with something clean and short,” she says. “Perhaps a buzz cut, something messy on top or styled slicked back or to the side.”
The Best Hairstyles for Oval Faces
Oval faces tend to be long, so you want to choose a hairstyle that doesn’t make it look any longer. “Leave some length on the sides,” Dixon recommends. If you go too short on the sides, you might end up looking like one of the Coneheads.
The Best Hairstyles for Rectangular Faces
Rectangular faces—also referred to as oblong faces—are long and thin around the cheeks. “Try the shaggy ‘90s cool guy’ look—parted in the middle and neat around the neck,” Dixon suggests. “Or shave the sides, and let it grow longer on top, like Jon Hamm in Baby Driver.”
