Nobody is denying that there are many, many good reasons to change your bedsheets on a regular basis. For example: The average person leaks around 100 liters of sweat in their sleep each year, according to one British study. The same study also found that most pillows have anywhere from four to 20 different species of fungus on them, which explains why, according to sheet-makers Parachute, your bedding should be washed at least every two weeks.
So far, so good. But considering how lazy and/or slobbish most guys are when it comes to their sheets—a study by mattress company Ergoflex, in fact, found that more than half of men aged 18-25 only wash their sheets four times a year—the results of a recent survey we ran raised a few eyebrows around the Dollar Shave Club office. And by raised some eyebrows, we mean our eyebrows shot off our faces and are now embedded in the ceiling.
50 percent—a full half—of the men we spoke to claimed that they wash their sheets every single week. Fifty percent. Every week. Now, if this is true, it’s impressive. But…it can’t be true, can it? Are there that many men out there who can actually get it together to do such a boring chore that frequently? 52 times a year? For context, of the women we spoke to, only 45 percent made such a bold claim, and it’s hard to believe that, on average, men are more fastidious about their bedding than women. Are these men answering aspirationally? Are they worried their moms will see the results? Are they genuinely just delightful, clean, organized people? Sadly, we may never know for sure.
As for the rest of the survey, a more believable 30 percent of men told us they change their sheets every two to three weeks, while a further 11 percent admitted to doing it once a month. Beyond that, some people were perhaps a little too honest, with four percent of men (and five percent of women!) confessing to washing their sheets three to five times a year, and one percent of both men and women—all of whom, we presume, were actually bedridden—saying their sheets only saw the inside of the washing machine once or twice every year. Excuse us while we shudder.
At the other end of the scale, four percent of men said they wash their sheets more than once a week, which seems excessive, but perhaps they’re the exact same four percent of men who are getting their hair cut more than once a week—all that loose hair in the bed must be itchy, right?
