Are you one of those guys who wants to look stylish but finds it doesn’t come all that naturally? We feel you. Don’t fret: With some advice from LA-based stylist Rayne Parvis, we’re all going to learn how to dress a little better. In this edition, we’re figuring out how to look good when you’re straining to set a new personal record in the gym.
Step #1: Out With the Old
Because we’re expecting to sweat, many of us exercise in old clothes that we don’t care much about. If you’re planning on catching the eye of your gym crush, however, Parvis recommends leaving those ragged garments in the back of the closet where they belong. “Avoid baggy sweatpants, cheap white T-shirts with yellow armpit stains, worn out tennis shoes and old T-shirts that you’ve had for 15 years,” she says. Remember: Washing the sweat out of nicer gym clothes is a viable option, after all.
Step #2: In With the New
You ideally want your gym clothes to be both stylish and functional. As such, Parvis recommends wearing a basic hoodie, a dri-fit T-shirt (which wicks sweat away from the body) and tapered sweatpants or plain gym shorts (which have a media pocket that keeps your phone from flopping all over the place while you’re doing jumping jacks). She also recommends finishing off your gym outfit with a versatile gym shoe.
Step #3: Keep it Simple
“Neon exercise clothes are really tough to pair with other garments, so it’s best to stick with basic colors that you wear often — I recommend black, navy and grey,” Parvis says. Wearing dark colors (as opposed to, say, highlighter yellow) has two other added benefits: They’re slimming, and they don’t show sweat as much as light colors do.
Step #4: Accessorize
“Cell phone armbands are pretty cool, since they’ll keep you from losing your phone when you put it down to do an exercise, or having to place it in one of those nasty cupholders that are filled with everyone’s sweat,” Parvis says. She also recommends wireless earbuds, which will keep you from getting tangled up in your stationary biking while sweating it out to Eye of the Tiger.
