How to Wear a Tank Top

A stylist shows us how to wear the summertime staple while still looking good.

Are you one of those guys who wants to look stylish but finds it doesn’t come all that naturally? We feel you. Don’t fret: With some advice from LA-based stylist Rayne Parvis, we’re all going to learn how to dress a little better. In this edition, we’re figuring out how to wear a tank top in style (because how else are you going to show off your guns?)

Step #1: Prepare Your Bod
Because tank tops are so revealing, Parvis says amping up your workouts and trimming any overgrown bushels of hair — including in your armpits, on your chest and even on your shoulders if you’re an extra hairy dude — are of the utmost importance if you’re planning on looking stylish. No matter how nice the tank top itself is, people won’t notice if they’re too distracted by clumps of curly hair poking out all over the place.

Step #2: Avoid the “Gym Rat” Look
Polyester tank tops covered in logos
(and with dropped armholes) are best saved for the gym, and only the gym, according to Parvis. “I recommend cotton tank tops that are one solid color, striped or covered in a repetitive graphic pattern,” she says. That way, you’ll look like you’re just going for that classic summertime look, which just so happens to also show off the fact that holy cow, your arms are ripped, bro.

Step #3: Mix and Match
If you’re going for the “beach day” look, Parvis recommends pairing your tank top with shorts or chinos. “No matter what bottoms you choose to wear, you want them to be made of a lightweight material, like cotton,” she explains. That way, you won’t look business on the bottom and party on the top.

If you’re going for a slightly dressier look — say, you’re attending a nice dinner while on a tropical vacation — Parvis suggests wearing a lightweight blazer or an open button-down shirt with the cuffs rolled up over your tank top. Whether casual or a little more sophisticated, she also recommends wearing boat shoes to complete the summertime look.

Lastly, don’t forget to wear sunscreen, or you’ll be in for a serious tank top tan.
